Help Problem downloading photos from camera to tablet

When I connect my Nikon camera to my P7510 via USB there is contact because the camera lights up briefly and the Gallery on the tab opens but that's it, nothing. The camera has turned off and the tab appears not to see the camera. If I remove the sd card from the camera and insert it into the connector the tab happily accepts the photos, this is the same connector that the USB cable from the camera has been attached to.
Other contributors to this forum have written that they have been able to download from their cameras. Can someone please tell me why this doesn't happen with me?

I have had not problems with my Nikon D90.

A few points:

Turn on your camera before connecting to the tablet.
Make sure camera is in PTP mode in USB settings. Mine asks me what mode I want to use when I connect it.

Thanks for your response. My camera is a Nikon P510 and I have been advised that on these newer models the handshake between camera and computer is automatic and therefore there is no setting on the camera, as is the case with yours, to initiate the process.
