Anyone know how to save a favorite in google maps on HTC Hero?

I don't think you can. As far as i know and used you can only get directions to a certain place or add a contact to the address.

you can creative favorites on the website but i don't know if the mobile app syncs with this or not ...

Nav Launcher will let you save favorites. It is in the market.
