Help Problem with USB port

Something strange happened to my Razr Maxx this evening: Whenever I plugged my USB cable into it, it detected the presence of an HDMI cable and rotated the phone display. Of course, no HDMI cable was actually in the house, much less in the phone. After swapping USB cables with no change, I started pushing upward on the USB connection. Whaddya know: The display rotated back to portrait mode. When I let up on the pressure, the display rotated to landscape and a dialog box asked me to select a display mode. This should not be happening; but it is. Any ideas as to why? The device is a refurb; I've had it for about two months after having one of those plant watering globes fall out of an overhead plant and explode on my previous unit.

TIA (which also seems to describe the phone's current state).

Furthermore, and even more annoying, the device seems to think there's an HDMI cable connected when there's no cable connected to it. This is beginning to sound like time to swap out for another phone. None of the phones I've had before have behaved like this.
