problems with phone memory

im using a galaxy ace I have a 2g memory card in it but it keeps telling me the phone is low on memory ect if its possible how do I change the settings so apps ect are saved on the sd card an not the phone?

i cant work it out as I have over a gig of free memory on the card and its beginning to stress me out lol.

any advice would be appreciated. thank you in advance

I have a Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i and it has an internal available storage of 16.03 MB, yes only (I have no clue how 174 MB got used). My device memory is 200 MB.

I have a 1.85 GB (or 2 GB) SD card that is currently being completely useless.

I'm now not receiving any messages into my mobile, and I can't install any more apps, because it says that my internal memory is full.

I unmounted and formatted the SD card, tried installing the apps I want, but it still didn't "recognize" my SD card and installed my apps there...

Since this topic is close to my problem I wanted to post here, somebody help ASAP please...

This is one of the most common complaints of this device users, the device has an extremely low amount of internal memory and most apps these days are quite big in size and require to be installed on the internal memory. Very few apps have the option to be installed in the sd card. So there is not much you can do about this because you may use a 2gb or a 16gb sd card and it will still not solve your problem unless you are willing to root.
I'd suggest you limit the number of apps to absolute essentials and try moving the apps to sd card(whichever can be moved) through the application settings in the settings menu.

There is a big load of information on this exact topic in this forum, so i'd suggest you search a bit and you will easily find the required solution to this.

Clear your cache, that's what taking up all the internal memory.
As for the sd card, don't bother, its not the card's fault, your card is fine, try the file explorer and you will see the sd card content visible there, by default apps are installed in the internal memory however you can move some of the apps that can be moved to the sd card through the settings menu. Other than that there is not much you can do without root, just try to keep the free internal memory above 20mb by limiting the number of apps and routine cache clearing and you will be able to install/update apps and send/receive texts.

Rooting is setting up the phone so you can run apps with administrative privileges (like "Run as administrator" in Windows). It's also an easy way to turn your phone into a paper weight if you don't know what you're doing. (We see many posts here from people asking for help because they deleted a file that, if they hadn't rooted the phone, they wouldn't have been able to delete. And at that point you need some kind sole to email you the file and you have to learn how to sideload files. It's easier to just use the phone the way it was meant to be used.)

While i agree that rooting gone wrong has some serious bad consequences but if you just follow the instructions and use a bit of common sense i believe there is no danger to this whatsoever.

Plus i do not feel that this phone is of any use given the amount of internal memory that comes with it, its quite pathetic, install 4 apps and its full!
What's the point in buying an android phone if you can't even install apps on it. Samsung really made quite a weird choice in its hardware configuration for this device, maybe they did not foresee the rate at which the app's size has increased through the years.

I am looking to overcome this problem by:-

Have done these steps:-
- bought 16GB Toshiba class 10 micro sd card off amazon

Should work. Doubt you'll need 2GB ext (hard to fill that without running out of internal storage anyway), and I'd not bother with swap (most ROMs won't use it anyway). And if you've installed CWM then you don't need a copy on the card (same with the ROM, but you've not said you've flashed a ROM yet). But root, partition, link2sd should work.

Hi Hadron,
With the ace I need to keep CWM on the sd card as when I go to recovery it is always the Samsung recovery, then I run CWM from the sd card and use it.
I realise the ext was a bit big but I would not otherwise use the space on the sd.
Heard various things about swap, not used, would slow the phone down, but again had the space so went for it and will see if it impacts performance.
Thanks for input.

Your configuration seems good, albeit a bit high but that's your choice.
I use an 8gb class 6 card with a 500mb ext4 partition for apps. I don't use too many apps, have about 30 apps on the phone at the moment.
You can also use minitool partition wizard to create the partitions since the cwm only supports upto ext3 partition format, and ext4 is much better.

Also i don't think swap is much needed, although i think you might need a custom kernel for that to work, i am not sure about it as your device is S5830i, just confirm it before going for it.

Also, what is the cwm version you have for S5830i?
Come to think of it, i think there is a permanent version of cwm available for your device instead of this temporary one that needs to be flashed everytime via the stock recovery.

Ayush,
The CWM I have is from the unbrick tutorial, the zip is named ClockWorkRec5830i.zip, when I run it it shows version v50.2.6.
When I reboot from the CWM and then go into recovery the Samsung recovery comes up, to get CWM again I choose to apply update from sd card and choose ClockWorkRec5830i.zip.
Note also in the tutorail it states that Samsung recovery should be used to flash ROMs as CWM may brick your phone in red below, I have cut and pasted instructions from tutorial below.
So far everything in the tutorial has worked for me and I am nervous of diverting from it due to the issues/risks with software versions on the different aces.
I am about to flash Mindcr v2.9 at the weekend and I am intending to use Samsung recovery as instructed in the tutorial.
I would have posted questions on the tutorial entry but I am not allowed to,
  • ## First ROM flash
  1. Download any one of the Rom from below thread and place in SD card-
[*]Download cwm ( CWM_temporary without kernel.zip) and place in sd card - (Download)
    [*]Switch off the phone.
[*]Press sound up + home and power button together to got to Samsung recovery mode.
[*]Select "apply update from sdcard" ----->and choose ClockWorkRec5830i.zip. CWM will load.
[*]To backup got to "backup and restore" -----> Backup.
    [*]Select "wipe data / reset"
    [*]Select "wipe catch partition".
[*]Now Select restart your phone and Press sound up + home and power button together to got to Samsung recovery mode as you did before.
[*]Again select "apply update from sdcard" and select the rom you want to flash(remember flash via SAMSUNG recovery, cwm may softbrick your phone).
[*]Wait for completion and restart the phone. Phone will work with new rom.
[*]To go back to stack just go to CWM ---> "backup and restore" ----> restore and select restore point.

Hi I am new and this is my first post so hope I am doing it right!

I have a galaxy Ace GT-S5830i. For some reason I can no longer see the internal memory on PC or Kies. the phone is working perfectly well. I can see the sd card on both PC and Kies. It was working perfectly well until I tried to connect to Windows 8. I have reverted to Windows 7 but can no longer see the internal memory

HELP!!

Hi Ian,
To access my phone SD card I never connect the phone to my PC as like you I found it a bit hit and miss.
I have a micro SD card to USB holder which you put your sd card into and it can then be used like a USB memory stick. They cost peanuts see link below to amazon,

Hi Jeffers

The problem I have is with the internal memory not the SD card. I just can't see the internal memory either on Kies or file manager on the phone. Strangely I have installed ASTRO File Manger and I can see some of the internal memory.
All this happened after I tried to connect to Windows 8

Hi Ian,
My apologies.
So your phone works ok, your PC recognises it when you connect it, but when you click on it in windows explorer it is empty?? Really weird :-(
When I had to connect my phone to my PC it was and still is running Windows8. I had to try a number of times to get my PC to even see the phone. Switched the phone off and on, plugged it into different USB ports and tried different cables to connect it. Don't know what the problem was but the PC eventually saw the phone as a Modem :-) and I re-installed new software on the phone which was a great relief.

Hi Jeffers

The galaxy Ace GT-S5830i is not compatible with Windows 8 I have a call out to Samsung but still waiting for a reply.
The problem I have is 2 fold as the phone won't show on Win 8 of Kies. When I try it on my wife's laptop (Win 7) Kies can see the sd card but not the internal memory.
Also the My Files app can not see the internal memory.

Ian
