Profile manager applications not altering notification tones

Since the old Nokia days the ability to set profiles (i.e. sound levels and different ringtones) for different situations has been essential to me. I have previously used "Ear" (which still used to crash rather regularly) but I can't seem to find it on Playstore anymore. I now have a brand new Samsung Galaxy S5 on Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop?) and I have tried several profile manager apps but no matter what I try the 'phone just plays that annoying Samsung whistle when I get an SMS, even though I have never had that tone set for anything. 'Profile Scheduler' seemed good and all the settings showed as having been altered to the tones I selected, but when I got an SMS it still just played the whistle. I have been through all the in-app settings on all the apps to make sure they are overriding the 'phone and I have also been into the text messaging settings and set it to the default tone (i.e. whatever is set by the app) but nothing has worked. Please can someone offer some advice as this is starting to drive me crazy!

Welcome to Android Forums.

You could checkout the Tasker sub-forum to this forum. Tasker takes some investment in learning but it has the capabilities you are looking for.

As an example ... I have a Tasker Profile that reads the text of incoming SMS messages to me (*I also have a task that toggles it on and off.)

Thanks, I might have to resort to that- although one of my other main requirements for an app is that it's free!
I tried a couple of other apps last night and despite the system ringtone showing as having changed to my choice (via the app) I still got the whistle!
