'PROMOTION" ad or virus?

Intermittently - once a week or so I open my Home page and find, above the app icons a grey bar, about 3 or 4mms deep, running across the face with the word PROMOTION in white capital letters inside it. No app can be opened when this is displayed. Tapping it has no effect - so there's no way of finding out what it's a promotion for. Only tapping the Home button makes it disappear and frees the Home page for use.
Has anyone else encountered this nuisance and found out which app is responsible for it? Uninstalling existing apps one by one and waiting a week or more would take an age. It's about the most stupid thing I've ever encountered.

Never met it but it probably is adware in one of the apps you installed. You might clear browser caches in case, but this blocking the whole screen makes me suspect it's not that simple.

You could check your apps' permissions: I would guess this would need the permission to draw over other apps. You will probably have several with that (it has legitimate uses, after all) but it may narrow the field.

Adware is the top suspect so far - adware introduced in an update to an app previously clean - or with ads properly contained within the app (nobody can object to that). Keeping fingers crossed that somebody else has both encountered it AND identified the culprit!

I got the same problem. It sometimes shows an add and sometimes doesn't. I can't find a suspicious app and clearing browsing history doesn't help. Ideas?

Suspect it was a sleep monitoring app - but I uninstalled a batch of unwanted apps - about 15 - and it's solved it -except I don't know which one is the culprit!
