Properly charging battery?

I have an HTC and the battery life isn't all that great to begin with. I always charge the phone at night when I sleep. What I want to know is if this is ok to leave it on the charger at night for that amount of time?

Also, when the phone is getting pretty low on battery I plug it in before the warning comes on to charge. Is this bad?

But no matter what I charge the phone at night even if it was recharged at some point during the day. Will this ruin the battery?

Yes.
