Protect mobphone with (hardware and NOT SIM based) PIN possible?

pstein

Newbie
Normally when I turn on a mob phone with inserted SIM I am asked for a PIN (=PIN of the SIM).

Now assume I remove the SIM and turn on the mob phone:
I am currently NOT prompted for a PIN any more.
Everyone can look at my mobphone settings.

How can I protect my mob phone with hardware (=NOT SIM based) PIN?

Android has a number of options, pattern, face recognition, PIN and password (in order of security - or lack thereof* ;)):

Settings .. Security .. Screen Lock

If you want to be even more secure, you can encrypt the phone's internal storage:

Settings .. Security .. Encrypt Phone

Note that with both a screen lock and encryption, you will be prompted for the pattern/PIN/password each time you unlock the screen - a minor inconvenience IMHO.

* unless you religiously clean the screen after every use, the pattern option is pretty much useless as it can 'cracked' by simply tilting the phone to show the smear across the screen, clear as day - apparently, face recognition is so insecure, selecting it brings up a warning
