Proximity Sensor (that old chestnut!)

Hi there,
Can someone please tell me what this does? I tell you for why (I have Gingerbread v2.3.3).

My take on this is that if you uncheck the "Turn on proximity sensor" setting, then when you are on a call the screen is always lit. On mine it still turns off and have to wait a few moments before it comes back on. Seems as if it's lagging. Anyway, I have also set the display "screen timeout" to 30 minutes, but it still does the same.

Any ideas would be most welcome as everytime I take the phone away from my ear I have to wait over a second before the screen comes on. So annoying.

Many thanks.

Screen timeouts are overridden during calls by proximity sensor. This is done to save battery life. The lag you are talking about is polled I/P from proximity sensor.

You can understand it as google sync for gmail app. The faster the sync the more the battery usage. but lesser the delay.
