A few days ago this crazy little digital thing from yes walnart started screwing up badly. It "tells the time" very fast, from 12:00 to 12:59 in less than a minute, and does that again and again. I have unplugged and replugged, waited a while, but no dice. It probably wasn't under warranty in the first place.

Yeah... it's probably running on a low-bidder processor chip that was never calibrated to "one second". If you can still get a refund, get it. This is why we don't use digital thermometers to check our temperatures and see if we have a fever: there is no way to know how accurate (or not) those cheap things are. We have old-school mercury thermometers: humans have known the properties of mercury for thousands of years... the thermometers are consistently accurate and NEVER need batteries. The best place to find them is yard sales, estate sales or ebay.
