Pulse News Reader - Facebook Permissions CHANGED while in use!!??

scudder

Android Expert
Hello...first time ever installing/using Pulse on my EVO and was wondering if anyone experienced what I did and/or has an explanation??

After the initial install and FIRST launch of the app ever on my phone, I was looking around and getting used to the UI and all the feeds, including the Facebook options. I attempted to activate access to Pulse's "Facebook Links" and was met with a "permissions" page which I read through. There was a WHOLE LIST of permission and data access possibilities including Pulse posting things to my wall, Pulse accessing my Facebook data and information, Pulse contacting me at my Facebook email address among other permissions. I, honestly, thought that the NEED for Pulse to contact me at my Facebook email address was a bit ODD but there was an option to be contacted through an anonymous server which I did opt for. I signed into Facebook through Pulse and looked around. Everything seem fine.

I then signed OUT of Facebook on Pulse and later signed out of Facebook completely on my phone.

Later I signed back into Facebook, back into Pulse and was organizing feeds again, including Facebook access through Pulse. I saw again, as expected, the Pulse "permissions" page for access to Facebook, however, this time it was MUCH MUCH different. The request for access only had ONE SINGLE STATEMENT:

Access my data any time
Pulse may access my data when I'm not using the application

Now THIS was NOT cool. First, where did the other list of permissions go that I saw originally?? They just vanished!! Where was the statement regarding Pulse posting things to my wall?? Or accessing my data an information?? Or contacting me at my Facebook email address?? Or the option for Pulse using an anonymous address to contact me??

Secondly, this ONE, SINGLE permissions request is QUITE DIFFERENT, and MUCH MORE INVASIVE!! Can access my data at ANY TIME...and even WHEN I'm NOT USING THE APPLICATION??

So my questions are as follows: (1) what happened to the FIRST set of permission I DEFINITELY saw that has now DISAPPEARED where I could have chosen an anonymous email contact option?? and (2) why were the original permission statements replaced by this invasive one-line ANY TIME/FOR ANY REASON/WHEN YOU AREN'T LOOKING permission request??

I have never seen permissions for accessing data change WHILE THE APP WAS IN USE and (2) never saw such an all-encompassing permission request for an app. Has anyone ever come across a request like this that was THIS BROAD??? Or am I perhaps a bit ignorant to just how much "permission" some seemingly innocuous apps have to access my data?? :(

THANKS!!

All those caps and exclamation points, chill bro.

I would think it would be because you already accepted the other permissions, so Pulse has it stored in it's database, so now it just gives you the condensed version. Only thing I can think of, try uninstalling the app, rebooting, then setting it back up and see if it gives you the big list again. Not sure what your so worried about though, Pulse is a popular app from a good developer, there are wayyyyyyy more apps to worry about. Also, since you seem very concerned with privacy, may want to check out privacy blocker I believe it's called in the market, it allows you to scan your apps for privacy vulnerabilities.

Yea pulse is legit.

I don't know what happened to those other permissions, perhaps it was more facebook warning you what any app could do rather than pulse asking to do those specific things?

A lot of them are needed for it's share functions etc.

Thanks for the thoughts...I'm familiar with privacy blocker. I'm not "very concerned" about privacy as much as this I really never noticed with any other app I've ever used a literal change in permissions WHILE USING THE APP. The new one-liner isn't really condensed as much as it is ALL-encompassing. The original list was a few bullet points and specific and this, literally "everything, anything, at any time." And I even tried the whole uninstall/reboot/reinstall/reboot/do the hokey pokey/do a rain dance...even signed out of Facebook and that original list of permissions never came back. And that just struck me as odd too...

All those caps and exclamation points, chill bro.
And did I just get "chill bro'ed" by someone who joined the forum a year ago but only has 9 posts?? Wow...another first;) I'd say you're wayyyyyyyy outta line but I don't take offense...apparently my CAPS and explanation points got your attention!!! Plus, would be unfair to use your word "wayyyyyy" right??

You chill bro on the "yyyyyy's" and I'll chill bro on the CAPS. We have a deal there chief?? Ok sparky, good to know...

May wanna check my join date again tough guy, I just never use this forum because normally it's full of newbs and I got out of that phase when I started theming and compiling source :)

Definitely does get attention though, just in a whiny, complaining way.

Quick on that edit huh lol

Hey Chief...it's me, Tough Guy...the newb;)

Yeah, I'm both honest and accurate. Did a quick glance and thought your join date HAD TO be April 2011 because of your whopping 9 posts. Then I noticed that you had 9 posts in the past YEAR which made your attitude even more laughable.

While you're theming, might try to mod a little attitude adjustment. You come here now sportin' the big, double-digit 10 posts in a year with your comments and everyone's gonna think all you're theming is the color of flowered panties. As far as anyone can see from your numbers and your attitude, you're much more impressed with yourself than anyone else is.

And be careful...one more reply to me and my "whiny complaining" will own 27% of your attention for all the time you've ever been here. You'll have to stop calling me Tough Guy and more accurately call me your boyfriend 'cause you'll be my bitch:D

Do I hear post #11 coming??? LOLOL. I'd shoot for owning HALF your posts but I'm already tired of dealing with a 10-post newb like yourself. Honestly, while you're "theming" please consider an attitude mod as your next project...

LMAO @ associating join date and post count with knowledge, and to write that much seems he must have got to you. Also, while your at it you should make fun of me too because I just joined this forum. Got it right when it said whiny.

Wow another genius who doesn't get it...

I never associated join date and post count with knowledge. I associated it with crap attitude and lack of courtesy. Your "lmao" at what you thought I meant is smartly laughing at your own ignorance. You can be smart and capable and also be a prick. Sorry, that doesn't impress me.

You're not even swift enough to realize why I called him a newb...had nothing to do with any knowledge. Theme and source code circles around me, knock yourself out. But post 8 times in 12 months and throw me a "chill bro" and a "tough guy" reference instead of just answering a question? Then my referring to the putz as a "newb" as I did based upon his attitude (and not why you thought) is frankly a courteous overstatement.

Again, I could care less how much ya know if you "chill bro" someone and come across like a way-too-impressed with yourself schmuck. My comments were solely directed to "chill bro's" attitude. He was the one throwing in the theming and source code "knowledge" as if I'd be impressed.

Clearly, you didn't get my point and you relate to the other poster...wow, quite a talent. By the way, no need to make fun of you...you're doing stellar all by yourself.

Well, it appears that the permissions "change" that I experienced mid-stream while using the app actually did happen. I received an official response from a Pulse employee as to why it did. Makes sense after reading the information which can be found here:

Have the Facebook permissions/extent of permissions changed while using the app??

Hope this information is advanced enough for any themer or source code writers who possess a level of knowledge that the rest of us could not even imagine. The response at the link above might only be at a "chill bro" or perhaps a "tough guy" level and NO WAY at a level approaching the ability of a couple posters in this thread.

My post count is bigger. My join date is earlier.

Ergo, my penis is bigger.

E-thuggin at it's best.

I totally agree. But be careful with the penis comments...couple guys here will DEFINITELY not leave you alone. You know how some of those theming/source compilers can get...
