putting apps onto your cell phone for 1st time

my cell is an Galaxy Q SGH-T589R

I've only ever used my cell phn. for calling when needed. I'm now going to be tossing my home phn. and just use my cell and everything (almost) it has. Which is a fair amount.
My carrier is Fido but I'm hooked up, internet wise, with Shaw.
