is there a way to cut a video in half? not the timing part i mean like what it actually shows? the image? lets say i take a video of an orange but i want to show only half of the orange? can someone help me with this its a big presentation i gotta do

Possible? Yes. Easy? That depends.

You can do it with software, but the majority of the software I know of isn't free... that being said, I'd bet free software out there will do that...

I'd look for alternatives to something like adobe after effects or premier.... there's one I'm thinking of... I think it beings with the letter "O" and has a blue logo... I've used that on Ubuntu and I think it had the option to do that.

The process you want to do is to use either the left/right or top/bottom half right?
(just so I understand).

What software you use will depend on the OS you are running... Actually, you *might* be able to do that in Windows Movie Maker....

Hope that helps.

Here's a thought:

A lot of easy to use video editing software have the capability to crop images. The intention of this feature is to either eliminate letter box or pillar box portions of a recording, but I don't see why you can't use it to cut a frame in half.

The trick is in getting something to fill in that missing half. Let's say you have a 1000 pixel wide video, and you crop out the left 500 pixels. If you save as a 500 pixel wide video, the aspect ratio will be distorted. If you save as a 1000 pixel wide video, the editor should pillarbox in the 500 pixel width of black to replace what you cropped out. You can take that and do a luma key to composite something into the left half.

So if for example you want to have half an orange with the same background, you can shoot the background with and without the orange (be careful in lighting not to have shadows), crop out the left half and replace it with black, then use a luma key to restore the background in the left half.

I think you might be better off finding someone local who can do it for you and/or teach you how to do it. I could do it since I'm in that business, but you might not want to pay the rates I charge.

You could try VidCoder. That's got good cropping options, including cutting it in half if you want.

i tried with the vlan but it wont open mp4

It's not got DRM has it? - like bought from the iTunes Store? Normally VLAN can open MP4s no problem. Because if a video file has DRM copy protection, you can't do anything with it, except play it. Where did the video come from, because if it was bought on-line, like from iTunes, Amazon or Google, it will almost certainly have DRM.
