question about"bring your own phone" on a CDMA network

Im used to GSM, where I can just pop in a SIM card in whatever device I want to use as long as its built-in radio circuits are the same frequencies in use on the 2g/3g network of my provider.

Is the same true for (US based) Verizon and or Sprint (both CDMA)? Can I pick out a CDMA android phone, and as long as its radios are the right freq, will Verizon/Sprint allow me to activate it on their network?

In short, no. You can only use specific carrier branded phones with these two carriers. Also, no SIM cards on CDMA.

You can flash some CDMA devices for use on other CDMA carriers but most CDMA carriers won't activate devices from another carrier from what I've seen.

I can't imagine how nice it would be to have carrier agnostic phone options. One of the new Moto Droids on Sprint please.
