Question about gmail sync

I realize there are a lot of questions about synchronization but I haven't found anything related to my specific question:

When I add gmail contacts on my android phone (HTC Desire) they immediately disappear. I have figured out that this is due to the automatic sync and I can understand and accept that. The problem is that it only syncs FROM gmail TO my phone, when I also want it to sync FROM my phone TO gmail. Is there any way to change this? It's annoying as hell to make changes on the phone just to have it overwritten seconds later by the sync.

I have checked the settings but all I can find is to turn off or on the synchronization entirely. I don't want to turn it off, just sync in both directions. If there is a conflict the latest changed object should be used, not always the gmail object. I think this is pretty basic sync functionality and I can't understand why it doesn't work like this to begin with.
