Question about LTE/4G networks

Will current phones be able to utilize the data speeds that 4G allows?

EDIT: I know absolutely nothing about this kind of technology so be nice.

I don't believe so. I think phones will have to be outfitted with specific technology in order to pick up and use the signal.

For the record Sprint is not currently operating a commercial 4G network. The only company in the world who has a commercial 4G network right now is TeliaSonera in Stockholm and Oslo.

Verizon plans to launch in limited markets in 2H 2010. AT&T I think is looking at 2012?

Sounds about right. Verizon says they will launch in 20-30 markets in 2H 2010 and will have a complete network by 2013.

I can't imagine giving up my 3G phone before there is a complete network unless it is possible to create a 3G/4G hybrid which utilizes 4G when in range.

so 2011 is the earliest we can expect to see decent 4g coverage?

For the record, you are completely wrong. Ever hear of WiMax? Yeah Sprint already has nationwide coverage. I'm staring at my 4g WiMax modem as we speak. Verizon is rumored (not confirmed) to be leasing Sprint/Clears 4G WiMax as both they and ATT will not be able to Launch LTE until late 2012. Please do not litter the board will false facts because you like discrediting Sprint.

To the op, No iPhone will not have 4G for years to come. No cell phones will. 4G is primarily a data thing for now.

From sprints own website, 3g/4g hybrid modem available for purchase and activation.
