Question about payments and personal information

In this day and age is it possible to buy a new phone and prepaid plan in cash without giving out all kinds of personal information?

I am pretty sure if you do the prepaid plan all you have to give them is your credit card number...if you are refilling your phone online, otherwise if you are using a prepaid card i do not think you have to give them anything.

when paying in cash at a retail outlet I assume then all they need is the phone number, would that be correct?

I think when you activate the phone, you'll have to give out some info, at least on T-Mobile.
