ok,so if you root your android phone, can you still receive OTA updates?

"rooting" (for most intents and purposes, moving to a modified update) will require that you change a few things that the OTA updates depend on to work, so no. This is done to protect root, so that an update won't take it away from you.

But, shortly after the updates come out, there will likely be modified updates to allow you to retain root, but still enjoy all of the new features.
