Question on Android texting

So currently i have an iphone 3g but am about to make the switch to android (probably N1) anyway, the one thing that i LOVE about the iphone is the conversation-style texting.

What is the texting like on android? Does it follow this similar conversation-style?

Different phones do it in differnt ways. My HTC desire does not have that style of message box but there are numerous free apps that do it for you. Hansent is a popular one. Personally I just prefer the standard SMS listings so haven't bothered with Hansent but it is used by lots of droid users.

If you use the handcent app the texting is exactly like that

In my very short experience, that is not true if you use native SMS on your phone with it. Your SMS is charged for receive or send.

If you use it with an IM client, which from what I understand you need to use another app that will interacte with that such as Google Talk on your phone instead, then yes, it is free.

At this particular point in time, I've been unable to get it to work. I am waiting for the Android device I want to come available, so am trying to get it working on a WinMo device. Google talk, interestingly, is not available for WinMo.

It's certainly the case if you have SMS forwarding enabled. You can't forward SMS messages (or reply to forwarded messages) without using your carrier's SMS infrastructure. However, on its own (i.e. using the GV app), GV uses data for SMS delivery.

SMS (as offered by the carriers) has never been data. There were cell phones that weren't data capable that could SMS.
