Question re. K9 Email

Lord Vader

Android Enthusiast
I once tried it but uninstalled it for one main reason: there was no way to tell when I got new messages. I didn't want an audible notification, and vibrating wouldn't do the job, unfortunately. What I was hoping this app had was an easy way to simply look at the screen and know I had new messages in my Email accounts. Unless anything with this app has changed recently, two questions remain:

1. Is there a way to tell I have new messages by looking at the K9 Email icon and seeing it indicate this? The stock Email client, as bad as it is, at least has a green number in the corner pop up and indicate the number of new messages.

2. I have multiple Email accounts (work, personal, etc.). Is there a combined message box or something similar?

FWIW, I'm using an EVO.

Well, it's giving me the same problems as before: no notification in the notification bar and no colored LED blinking to notify me as well. I even set it to vibrate when a new Email came in, but the vibration isn't working at all either.

Looks like I'll uninstall it and stick to stock Email, which still has been the best I've used since I got my EVO. Honestly, I don't see what all the hoopla is over K9. I suppose if it was able to let me know when I got new Emails, that would be a small start.

It can do all the things you ask, and more.

Try reading the notes on it here:-

Wiki Pages - k9mail - K-9 Mail is an advanced email client for Android - Google Project Hosting

Hope this helps. :D

I did read the notes, and I did what I was supposed to do to enable notification in the notification bar and the LED; however, neither of those works. No matter what I try, I can't get this program to notify me of new Emails. That's the biggest reason why I ditched it months ago and why it looks like I'll have to do so again.

I asked my brother and sister, who also have EVOs (both unrooted, though), to try this and see if they have the same problem. They do. Why this is happening I can't answer.

Have you turned on notifications (Account Settings->Notifications; turn on New mail notifications, set ringtone, set to blink LED)?

Also, did you by chance set up a quiet time (Global Settings->Notifications), which would stop K9 from blinking and vibrating, though not, I think, from notifying?

Which ROM are you running?

I've never heard of this before; most curious.

Plan B...

turn off the Notification settings in K-9 and activate the Notification settings in your stock email. Sound, tone, LED, etc:

That way you will be notified when a new email arrives and open it with K-9.

Hope this helps. :D

I'll give that a try. Right now I'm trying to finish up installing a custom ROM. Karma never liked me, because it seems that nothing's ever easy for me! :p

Another major flaw that I don't like about K-9: I am unable to access the account settings when there is no Email in the box. This is weird, and unacceptable. Right now, when I open K-9, I see three things from top to bottom: "Unified Box," "All messages," and "Hotmail," this latter being my primary personal Email account.

I want to change Hotmail's polling frequency settings, but I am unable to do so. Pressing menu then settings doesn't even bring up the Account or Global settings options, and if I press on the one box that says, "Hotmail," nothing happens.

I keep scratching my head as to exactly why K-9 is so special and so hyped. I have really tried to like it--this is the 3rd time I've installed it, hoping they've eliminated the many bugs and flaws with it--but I just can't. The stock Email app that comes with my EVO, while not nearly as good as BlackBerry's Email setup, is far superior to K-9 and much more reliable to set up, change, etc. I've had zero problems with that, yet I've had numerous problems with K-9. I'm uninstalling it for the final time. Maybe one day a REAL Email app that IS close to BlackBerry's will come out. (That was the only thing I miss about the BlackBerrys.)

And their wiki pages? Useless. No one there seems to know what I'm talking about, and that's even IF one can get someone there to even respond.

Tap-and-Hold on the account name will bring up the menu to change the account settings. Or, when you are in the account, press Menu > More > Account Settings.

No it won't. Been there, done that. Didn't work. I just explained that above.

Are you running the latest version of K9?

If you can't even get to the Account settings, then something is seriously wrong :). Both of Rob G's suggestions get you to the Account settings.

Yes, I'm running the latest. Got it from their web site and not Market. I can access the account settings, but only when there is Email actually in the box. When there is no Email present, opening K9 gets me the three "boxes" to which I alluded above. Pressing on any one of them dos nothing, and pressing menu to get to account settings doesn't work, either.

That's weird. I just tried it on my k-9 mail and was able to get to the account settings page with no email in inbox. I was able to long-press an email account to get the account options dialog box.

I don't know if it makes a difference or if you already tried but did you try to download it from the market too?

I'm not using and evo nor running stock rom but I should think that shouldn't make a difference in this case.

Oh yeah, notification in the notification bar works for me too.
