Questions about the lapdock 500 pro

I'm considering getting a lap dock 500 pro but not sure. What's the review of some of the users using it and is it worth $300? I just sold my ipad and was waiting for the ipad 3 but was considering buy a lap dock instead.

I own one, wait for the IPAD3.
That is only one opinion......I happen to like it. it all depends on what you want out of it. I think it is very functional and useful. Like I said, it all depends on what you expect to get out of it. After all, it's not a laptop it is a lapdock and has its limits. I got mine for $249.00 since I have a coprporate account. compared to an Ipad, that's about the third of the cost. Overall, very satisfied with my purchase.

I would get the lap dock. Its very functional and well worth the price. To make it even more functional I have loaded a full version of Ubuntu in place of the webtop and have full PC functionality when using a portable hard drive connected to the usb port.

It seems that there are two questions that you need to answer for yourself.

1) Is there anything you can do on an iPad that you can't do on your phone (which is really the brains behind the lapdock).
2) Do you want to carry and use a tablet, or do you want to carry and use a 'laptop' - or at least something shaped like a laptop.

Loading Ubuntu on the lapdock as Frag did is a clever idea, but that OS is not for everyone (like every other OS out there).

I have a related question, what is the point of a lapdock? It's the size of a laptop, it's the cost of laptop, it has the battery life of a laptop, but it has the computing power of a phone.

I will answer each of your conjectured points........The size of a laptop? YES. The cost of a laptop? NO....far less. The battery of a laptop? NO.....easily more. The computer power of a phone? NO....has much more functionality that a phone itself with many add on possibilities including addtional internal memory through a SD card port. All in all, a great device that can really do anything a laptop can do but doesnt have its own hard drive; it uses the phone for its hard drive.....all in a less expensive device that easily holds it own in portable computing which is the point after all.

My laptop cost $350 and I have gotten 12 hours out of a charge (albeit with careful use. 8-10 hours is more typical with wifi, non-dimmed screen and whatnot). I'm sure it does greatly add to the FUNCTIONALITY of the phone, but as far I know it uses the phone as the CPU/GPU/RAM. Hence it has the computing power of a phone.

It can do anything a computer can? Really? Can I install/run Microsoft word? Excel? Power point? Photoshop? My random companies program? Will I be able to plug it into any random scanner, printer, etc and assume it just needs a driver to work? I'm sure they are perfectly functional devices, but when you can easily find decent laptops for around $250, and decent portable laptops for not a lot a more, what is the point of these things? (Not to mention its fairly safe to assume that alot of people who spend $X00 on a phone, thousands for service and is looking at spending $300 on an accessory already have a laptop).

I tried and returned the Lapdock 300. It's the smaller one; the keyboard was cramped. I hear the 500 Pro has a more normal-sized kb. The other limitation was the connection cable was ill-conceived; there is no way to really mount the phone if it has a case on it - just connect the cable and have it partially-rest on the table at an awkward angle.

The concept is intriguing, but the execution leaves a little to be desired. It may cost less than a laptop, but not by much, and it costs about as much as a NEW netbook, which runs a Windows OS.

I was open-minded about it, but once I had the feel and look of a laptop at my fingertips, I was dissatisfied that I didn't have at least the performance of a netbook or entry-level laptop.

I may look into a Bluetooth(tm) keyboard for it though, instead.

Suggest getting the Atrix lapdock and switching the connectors on it. Better display, 12" display, so smaller form factor, better build and can be found for less than $150.

BTW I am skeptical on the high res iPad 3, since seems will be scaling issues (blurry) and too much for some apps to keep up with using a mobile chipset.

By the time apps catch up, the iPad 4 will be out.

Call your local Verizon stores, They are honoring the $149.99 price. I called three local stores in my area and they are all honoring the $149.99 price.

Everywhere is out of stock!!!
So I just got a 100.
Posting from it now, 10.1 inch screen is big enough for me. It feels solid for weighing less than 3lbs.
Small enough to carry almost anywhere. I'm loving it so far, I have a feeling I will use it quite a bit.

I am using a Lapdock 100 and love it. I have used extensively while I am on the road and really like the smaller footprint. Works great while in a car on your lap (passenger).

Weptop is very useful. I don't carry a notebook any more and can do all of my work. The citrix interface works as well as my desktop version ... performance is good and graphics and text clear.

I ordered my lapdock 500 thru verizon for 149 and they are out of stock,it will be shipped as soon as they get them, while I wouldnt have paid 249 or more.. i think for 150 ill give it a try....

I received mine last night. Haven't had a chance to play with it too much, but I like the weight (liteness) and sound.

Some issues that I had in a quick tryout so far:
- It Rebooted phone a couple of times
- Could not get netflix to work directly. (had to use netflix through webtop, not firefox.)
- Facebook games would not work.
- Video seems slightly off
- Mouse sensitivity is kind of off. Probably just needs adjusting.
- There is a new Time Warner Cable app, that required silverlight? Looks like I can't install it.

Again, not a lot of time spent. Lets try to provide each other problems and possible hints to have it work to our benefit. ;)

Still say the Atrix lapdock is a better buy than either of the VZW options. Display is far sharper (especailly more than 100) and better build. The one curve is having to modify the connector positions.

Shame VZW did not offer the Atrix dock model with connectors in correct position. The Atrix dock is slightly less than 12"", so a nice compromise between the 100 and 500.

I have the ATRIX dock and the 500 pro and would agree to a point. I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the 500. It is far better than the 100 and the extra screen space is very nice. I would say that if you can find either the Bionic or Atrix lap dock which are the same except for the connecter layout to give them a look if you can get it for $100 or less but at $150 the 500 is well worth it.

500 pro on the right with Razr docked, Atrix LapDock on the left with Droid 4 docked.
