Help Quick close and return to menu

On my previous phone, holding down the end call button would back you out of whatever you were doing, and return you to the home screen. Shutting down the app in the process.

Is there a similar thing on the Galaxy? For instance, if I change my mind about this text I am sending, can I just close it and go home, rather than having to back out of it step by step?

On the Vibrant version of the Galaxy S I just hit the home button and it takes me back to the home screen. It doesn't "shut down" the app, as it did on my BB for example.
