Help quick question about memory

So I bought this S4 with 16GB internal memory.

I think I am confused...most phones come with a GB or two of "ram" and some level of internal memory. How is that internal memory different from an sd card? Can I put a 64GB sd card in the S4? And still have the 2GB ram and the 16GB internal memory?

Can the internal memory be upgraded?

The 16GB is not memory, it's internal storage (although many people call it memory).

RAM = Memory = 1, 2, 3, or 4GB on current phones. You can't add RAM to your phone, it has a set amount that can't be changed.

If you want to increase storage, many phones have a Micro SD card slot you can put an SD card into, including the Galaxy S4. Some phones will use the SD card to store pics, videos, music, etc. and some will also let you move apps to the SD card.

Depending on your Android version, after inserting an SD card you can transfer apps to the SD card to free up your phones storage. Go to Settings -> Apps, then tap an app and you will see the option to move it to the SD card. Not all apps can be moved.

To add to @kate 's thorough and accurate answer. A portion of the internal storage is used by the phones system. So even if it is 16GB there may only be 10-12 available for storage.
I had:(:) an S4. I believe it called the internal storage Sdcard and the external is ExtSdcard. Not sure if that is confusing you also.

Thought you were looking at the S5 anyway. S4 is EOL.

EOL??

Bought the S4 for my wife whose occasional-use, Tracfone cheapie LG bricked. She likes Tracfone. The S4 is a Tracfone device and was less than she originally paid for the LG (although the same LG today is about $30.00).

I bought an S6 for myself / work (I can write it off).
