What does "delete old articles" do? And is it worth doing?

I know it obviously deletes the old articles. However, I was curious where it deletes them from. Does it simply delete them from the app to make it easier to show your chosen number of headlines? Or are they deleted or stored elsewhere?

This app has been regularly forcing a close and generally misfunctioning lately. Has it been the same for anybody else?
