Random locks and/or reboots

Hi,
Since yesterday my phone (Note 4) started locking up and rebooting itself to the point that it became unusable. Nothing has changed recently in my phone, I only added a new app (LastPass) but that was last week. I did a factory reset and it did not help, it was worse. For S&G I did a second reset and it was better, but still acting up. A while back I had the same issues but to a lesser degree, but it got back to normal after I got a new battery. Last night I replaced the battery with an old battery I had laying around and it got better, but still locks and randomly reboots. I have ordered a new battery to give that a shot and hopefully it will fix the issue. What I don't understand is what does the battery have to do with this behavior? Maybe nothing to do with it, but if that is the case, how can I fix my phone? I really do not want to spend the money on a new phone. Please advise.

Thanks for the reply, but I kept looking for answers after I posted here and I think I found it. What I had to do was remove the SIM card and re-insert it. Seems to have done the trick, more time will tell for sure. The phone is doing updates now after the last reset and it seems pretty stable.

Why does this work? I have no idea.

Hi,

I had this exact same issue.. install wake lock - power manager and click the option of partial wake lock. All my trouble with random restart issues are a thing of the past now. I got this solution from either this forum or some other helpful one.

Hope this resolves the issue for you.

Regards, Tripti.

Hardware or software issue. One you can do with a PC the other one requires a service center or knowledge of how and what to repair.

A firmware flash will either solve the problem or eliminate itself as a issue. Post your build number and I'll try and point you in the right direction.

I have been researching this for a few weeks now as I am a sufferer of the RRLock as well.
I am more and more convinced it is the battery for several reasons.
*Between my 3 batteries I get quite drastic variation of the symptoms from Boot loop on one to fairly stable on the other.
*Usage Manager > Battery gives me some strange grafts from plain flat to clipped hunks missing.
*Turning off Fast Charge has helped
*Restarting the phone when plugged into the wall charger results in coma. I have to unplug, remove battery, press power for 10 seconds, replace battery, press power.
*Charging when off I some times fail to get a battery indicator at all for any reason.
*My clock is behind on occasion by some random significant amount.
*When screen fails to turn off the phone acts up more and the battery is warm. (Developer mode has a tendency to arbitrarily disable screen time out when screen is locked.)
*Waiting on new 3rd party Battery (no longer trust Samsung labeled as ligit) as my final trouble shooting method.

Other symptoms I experience is that make me think the SIM card is involved.
*Apps doing odd stuff or performing backwards
*Not receiving text messages till I get blasted with them all at once.
*My clock is behind on occasion by some random significant amount.

Other symptoms.
*Google assistant ignores me when first opened.
*Many apps are slow and hang.
*Password @ restart hangs and will snap the caps back to lower case.
*On occasion I get the Updating ... DO not turn off target. I have to hold Volume down + Home + Power to escape

Few solutions I have tried.
* WakeLock
*Keeping battery cool
*Not rebooting the phone or using the phone when plugged in.

If anyone has any more symptoms please list them as maybe this will help understand what is happening.

I have seen bad or old batteries cause random reboots

Hi all, 1st timer here with the same problem as of this week. I'll try the wife's battery to see if that makes a difference. I unloaded 1200 photos/vids to unburden the processor and it may have helped a bit.

One symptom I've not seen listed is that when this looping occurs, the battery usually warms up and drains quickly. My 4 has lived it's life in a Defender Otter and looks like new in spite of perhaps 12 drops. The story continues....

This has only gotten worse. slower and doing strange things as if it has a virus. Google assistant some times is doing 2 things at once. While my phone is stable now due to wake lock and being cautious with over heating, when I reboot often I have to do the freezer trick.
I looked into many forums and found that the Snapdragon Motherboard was faulty from Samsung. I was offered a service of replacing it for $150. While I feel that is worth it HOWEVER, who made that "new" motherboard? Will I be replacing the same thing?
I can only steer people AWAY from the note 4 from what I have experienced.

And yet, the Tmobile buys were proclaiming how great the 4 is/was.

I added Wake lock, removed the sim with 1500 pics, unloaded all the pics in memory and now it seems better so far. Awaiting a mega battery from fleabay to see if the 5 y.o. battery is a factor. Stay posted.

I have had my Note 4 for over four years and besides replacing the battery each year it has been, and still is faultless. It is the best selling Galaxy Note of all time and is still in demand today, so it can't be all bad! Phil

I would appreciate philayl, if you could tell me what processor you have.
GPU Adreno 420 (Snapdragon 805)
Mali-T760 MP6 (Exynos 5433)
I have read quite a few people who say they have no problems have the Exynos.
Also I read several comments across the web that the break down happened about the 2y mark. But there where some who listed it happens later. 4years is moneys worth for sure.
I bought mine of Ebay "NEW" and the screen had scars. So I got screwed. But if I can get 4 years out of a new MoBo I feel it will be worth it.
Other wise I will move to the LG V20 the last phone I know if that has removable battery. Will miss greatly the stylus and all its features on the note series. (lest there is an app that can mimic that feature)

Hi, I believe that the processor in mine is the 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805,my actual model is the SM-N910F international factory unlocked. I am reluctant to give it up as a replaceable battery is a must for me. Phil

Yes, the freezing trick(I have to put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes other wise won't start at all) is one the symptoms..

I think is the last update..I'm downgrading.
