Razr HD set to topple iPhone?

It's the 4G. When the iPhone gets LTE, not the Apple-style, over-hyped HSPA+ imitation 4G, then the playing field will be leveled. Verizon has a time window right now to sell people on their un-matched LTE network. They've got to sell it before the other carriers build out their own LTE networks.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but it is hard to believe any Android device will ever overtake iPhone across the board. I've never had an iPhone, but I did have an iPod Touch years ago. The iPod seemed well made and it never crashed on me. Of course it couldn't do a quarter of the things my GNex can do.

I'm not hating on Android, but you can read any of these message boards and see how many problems many of these devices have. I like having choices, but I think it comes at a cost as far as quality control. However, I am so ready to own my first Motorola smartphone.

People have PLENTY of problems with their iPhones.
I owned an iPhone 3g that was completely un-usable after the upgrade to iOS 4.
It dropped calls quite often and I lost all my music twice trying to use iTunes completely un-intuitive sync features.

They're far from the magical "never crashes, just works" device Apple would lead us to believe they are.

Yes, I agree, they do crash as well, get bad apps, etc. Probably not as often, but not a perfect device either.

I would really find that hard to believe but here's an article that talks about it. It also says that the Razr Maxx outsold the iPhone on Verizon last quarter.

Droid Razr HD to Topple Next Generation iPhone?

patiently/impatiently waiting for info and the release of the Droid Razr HD.

Of course it could, since a lot of people are waiting on iPhone 5 and the lack of 4g hurts some as well.

I luv the GS3 and the Razr HD will certainly be good too, but the iPhone 5 will have 4g and wider screen display than the iPhone 4. It will destroy the HD and the GS3 in sales with VZW.

It will have a TALLER screen. Width will remain its narrow format. The hardware is below what the current crop of Android phones are (with the exception of the screen) and IOS has no standout features above what IOS 5 has. As I tell people, it is a simple phone for simple people.

That is one of my problems with the iPhone 5 it will have a taller screen but same width and if the leaked photos are any indication if just looks stretched, they need to make it slightly wider to accomidate the length. It seems it would make it harder to read webpages too being tall but no increase in width.

We will know soon enough, this Wed is the day.

I will say the Razr HD Maxx looks alot like the iPhone from the side with the metal band. In fact one of the tech guys at the show said "oh it looks like an iPhone from the side"
I just hope Apple doesn't sue them and cause a bug delay in the phone being released. Apple has been sue happy lately. lol

"Simple" folks vastly outnumber us geeks who dwell in the forums ;)

The iPhone 5 will sell a lot more devices than the GS3 or HD, with VZW.

Total phones should still be the GS3, but that is worldwide. Should.

I can understand simple and performance. Case in point, Games like NOVA 1, 2, 3, MC3 and others play smoother on my iPod 4 and iPad 3 than they do on my GS3. No comparison. Regardless of why, they simply just do. My guess is partly due to the coding effort with the Android versions is not the same as the iOS versions. That and the multitask environment if Android (a lot more stuff battling for memory channel bandwidth).

Added:

Still, I prefer my GS3 over and iPhone 5 :) A little harder to choose though with the tablets. Were it not for the great game emulators, I would probably prefer the iPad 3. Probably.

As far as legacy games on the iPhone 5, they will either have black borders on the sides, or be squished looking to fit the display. This will be a dilemma for programmers with all the legacy device owners, since they will need to code for both- If the option for legacy devices is to have proper ratio, this would probably mean black bars on top and bottom and smaller viewed app as a result. I do not see how this will end happily for all legacy device owners.

I don't know how people can say they prefer their current phone over a phone that isn't even out yet...

Apps written for an iPhone need to work on one or two phones. Apps written for Android have to work on 95 phones made by 6 different companies. I would hope an unmolested iPhone is more stable than the average Android once you start adding apps.

Apple is a powerhouse in the market...it doesn't matter if the latest Android has better specs, most people don't pick a phone with an Excel spreadsheet..they use their hands, eyes (and their friends). An Android stands the same chance of dominating the market that Ron Paul has this November. He may or may not have better "specs"...but people are going to buy an Obama or maybe a Romney.

I may be off on the percentages, but I believe Android currently holds 54% of the smartphone market share right now. Apple holds about 34%.

If you prefer to compare two phones on one carrier then look at the Razr Maxx vs the iPhone 4s. The Razr Maxx has been outselling the iPhone on Verizon for a little while now.

To be correct, it was only one or two months in Spring that Maxx outsold iPhone4s on verizon. After that, 4s reclaimed the top spot and now it's GS3 on top not just in verizon. But we all know that iPhone5 will soon blow everything away on sales. We android geeks are very small minority.

Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S: Samsung finally beats Apple in sales, but is it relevant?

This could also be the GPU. One of the biggest reasons apple does their own chips is so they can spec a beefier GPU than the standard stuff offered by TI or Samsung or whomever they might goto otherwise. Even the more modern Adreno 320 on 28nm in the S4 Pro will be only competitive with the iPad GPU since it was speced with a HUGE extra core version of the older Imagination Tech stuff.

Well the only truth here is in comparing particular device to iPhone. Android as a whole is bigger than iPhone by a good bit. That is a lot due to mass quantities of cheap android devices that even off contract are only a couple hundred bucks though I figure. There are lots of pretty popular somewhat spendy devices though also and the number just all add up. Samsung is the only one really making good money off android though since it's all divided into so many pieces, whereas Apple makes out on every iPhone.

Of course android phones as a whole is still far outselling iPhones according to the latest stats. But I think iPhone5 will close that gap a bit though it probably won't overtake androids in total. It will hold top spot on sales per handset for next several months. Then I guess android share will bounce back again when Samsung, HTC bring out their next iteration of GS, One line of phones in the middle of next year.

I'm curious how well iPhone5 will hold up in battery with larger screen, LTE as they have been fond of talking its better battery life against most of androids. I think now android is decent or better on battery too with phones like Maxx, GS3. And upcoming HD Maxx, Note 2 will be even better.

Not a great showing from Apple for sure. People will buy it though, we all know that.

UGH!! The worst part about watching at Apple conference is how they have to blow their own horn at the beginning every time and say how many units they've sold, how many apps are in the app store or how one tech site said they're the best. But whatever they have to do to keep people buying there products I guess.

As for the iPhone 5, all the rumor sites got it right so there wasn't much of a surprise and just go along with the minor upgrade thats Apple feels is necessary. I'll wait for the HD MAXX which will probably be my next phone.

To be fair, Google has done this at all of their events too. They even did it at the Razr HD announcement.

I always miss google events so I guess I have to retract that comment.

Not really, I find it equally annoying when anyone does it. ;)

BTW, you can find most of them on YouTube after the fact, if you ever want to watch them.

Also to be fair, the Motorola event recently was really lame. They could have made it really cool and interesting, but most tech companies lack Apple's showmanship.

Here it is, if you are interested. Skip to 20:55 to avoid the music.
