RCA Galileo Pro USB connection to PC

I just recently purchased an RCA Galileo Pro 11.5" tablet because I got it for $80. So far, it has been pretty nice with one exception: USB -> PC connectivity. While the device has both a USB and microUSB connection, I cannot get the tablet to talk to my PC either Windows 10 or Linux (Ubuntu 16.04). RCA claims that in order for me to transfer files from the tablet to the PC and vise-versa, I need to purchase THEIR microUSB->USB cable. I have 2 cables of that sort (not RCA) and cannot get communications working. Other users seems to be having the same problem, but no solution as of yet.

Could it really be that I NEED to use their cable? What could be so special about it?
