re: some help with a rca android tablet

reble

Android Enthusiast
This is a brand new RCA 10" Viking Pro model rct6k03w13 tablet. I can't get the tablet to sync and see my Dell laptop, OS WIN7 Home 32bit, via the USB cable, also the Dell laptop won't sync back and see the tabet either. I tried the USB cable on my cell phone to my Dell laptop it worked 100%. Did I miss something on the setup? The users guide is no help. What am I doing wrong?

If the tablet it brand new, then it's probably running Android Nougat or Oreo. That means the default setting for the USB cable is "charge only". When you plug the tablet into the laptop, pull down the notification bar and tap on the USB options notice. Choose MTP mode. This may not be a sticky setting, so you'll have to do that each time, depending how RCA has developed their firmware.

The Android version is 6.0. I pulled down the notifications bar. There is no "USB options notice" I screen captured the following attachment with my phones camera. That's all there is on the pull down notifications bar.

This was when the tablet was plugged into the Laptop? Are you using a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port? Sometimes the USB 3.0 ports "confuse" older cables.

I have no clue as to what the port on the tablet is, USB 2.0 or USB3.0. I also don't know if the cable is USB 2.0 or 3.0?

When it's plugged in, does it at least charge? You should see a USB notification when it's plugged in.

By the way this model of RCA tablet has it's own 5vdc input for charging. The USB micro B port is for data only.

Oh. That's a different animal. I looked up the manual for your tablet and it states "To enter the USB storage device, please go to Settings -> Device -> Storage & USB, and tap [USB plug icon]". You probably have to do that first before plugging it in to get the tablet into storage mode.

Just for argument's sake, go to settings>about phone>android version and let me know what it says.

1st off I went back to Walmart and exchanged the tablet for a new one. The new tablet has the same problem. The android version is 6.0. And I went to Settings -> Device -> Storage & USB. There wasn't any USB icon. The screen capture shows what popped up when storage&USB is taped.

I finely found the "select USB configuration". It is at settings > system > developer options > select USB config. But it still does nothing on any setting.

select USB config
CHARGE ONLY
* MTP
PTP
RNDIS
AUDIO SOURCE
MIDI

I don't think it's the developer option settings that you want. Sometimes USB settings don't show up unless the device is plugged in, but if you already tried that, then I'd have to suggest trying a different PC or a different cable.

There is no settings > devices > pc. I just don't know what else to do.

I got that right from the user manual on page 16. I don't know what else to tell you except take it up with RCA because either the manual is wrong or the feature doesn't work.

I just got done chatting with RCA support and this is what they had to say.

steve
the tablet won't talk to my laptop via the usb cable. i can't even get at the usb settings in the tablet

Mandy
Please note that the USB port is only 2.0 copatible
Compatible

steve
that isn't a problem
the laptop doesn't see the tablet nor does the tablet see the laptop

Mandy
Please use an alternative to transfer, ie. drop box applications / email attachments / micro sd card / jump drives
The usb cable has to be proprietary (RCA brand) in order to establish transfer
We sell them for 25 USD
steve
u are telling me that I have to buy a special cable from you to make the usb port usable?

Mandy
Usable for transfer
Yes, that is correct. As the tablets are locked to RCA hence proprietary cables are needed.
Thank you for your co-operation. Please feel free to contact us again if you have additional questions!

Didn't you get a USB cable with the tablet? I didn't see anything in the manual about needing a "special" cable. :(

No USB cable came with ether the Android or Windows version of this tablet (RCA Cambio). But the Cambio didn't need a special USB cable. But the Android emulator was clashing with the version of Win10 that they put in that tablet. RCA used to have a good name for high quality equipment, but not now.

IMO RCA ceased been a good name in 1986, when they were liquidated and broken up. RCA now is just a brand that's licensed by Technicolor SA in France, that's put on whatever budget things from unknown manufacturers.

See also Polaroid and Kodak.
