Ready to go iPhone to Android - Which (Device), Who (Carrier) and When?

Hi All

I've been a 3GS user for almost a year (purchased when first released), I was a pretty die-hard Blackberry Guy before that (Curve & Bold). I'm ready to make the jump to Android... I plan on passing the iPhone 3GS to the wife. I'm also not real pleased with AT&T and the unlimited rate plan change... I have gone over 2GB in a month a couple times, but could be a little more frugal with my 3G/WiFi if it were absolutely required. I'm not in a huge rush (other than my wife wanting the iPhone), and I'd hate to jump on something and have something much much better pop up 2-3 months later and be locked into 2 years with something inferior. (I know new stuff is always coming out and stuff is out of date the second you pull it out of the box and all of that)

I haven't really played with the Android OS extensively, but did play with the original Moto DROID for a week or so on Eval @ work from Verizon. It was heavier than I would have liked and I have no need for a slider KB coming from the iPhone world. I also handled an EVO 4G the other day and it was just too BIG for my taste (and my pants pockets) and I'm no Sprint fan (was a Nextel/Sprint user before the Blackberriy's).

I would like to get a device that already has installed, or available upgrade to Froyo 2.2 (for the improved enterprise device management requirements via Google Apps Activesync for my work). I'd also like to get something in the next couple of months, but could wait 6 or so if the device is worth waiting for.

So I'm considering my options right now... I'm sure there are others as the device/carrier choices are numerous, but here are the leading ones I'm thinking right now.

Option A) Stay with AT&T, Get a Nexus One (Simpler Billing with keeping the iPhone, family rate plan, could upgrade the wife's Razer as she's had a couple years)

Option B) Jump Ship to Verizon, Get an HTC Incredible Now (or whenever they are in stock)

Option C) Wait to see what/when the HTC Scorpion might be, and who will carry it (Rumors of Sprint and/or Verizon?)

Option D) Give the wife the 3GS and by a new iPhone HD/4 in a couple weeks (won't be a popular option on this forum I suspect, but I guess it's out there).

Option E) <Fill in the Blank>

You're already on sprint, what about the HTC Evo?

In 2-3 months you can always count on something better being released, it's the nature of technology.

Motorola is planning on releasing a new version of the Droid along with a Droid-like device with the physical keyboard for verizon.

Not on Sprint (AT&T), dislike Sprint (Bad experience with Nextel/Sprint in past), not crazy the EVO (too Big), and don't want a slider keyboard, all as mentioned in my original post...sorry if it wasn't clear
 
Oh, duh. For some reason I thought you said Sprint...

And I also just noticed I said with a physical keyboard. I meant without. Once again, my apologies. I mentioned Motorola's device planned to be without a physical keyboard. Unfortunately, not much is known about it. It is known as the Shadow but that's subject to change. Once again, my apologies.

Ok, I'll admit to being biased towards Motorola.

Nexus one is most likely the first phone receiving Froyo. The Incredible is one of the best android devices out there currently. The Incredible is a little better spec-wise and has a huge community here at this forum.

If it were up to me, I'd go with the Incredible (actually I'd go with the Evo, I love that behemoth of a screen). If you don't want to switch carriers, go with the Nexus One. See which has better coverage in your area and/or which is cheaper if you're impartial to either phone.

I've been locked into RIM and Apple now for 5 or 6 years that i've never really had much experience with any recent Moto or HTC or Samsung or anything really.

Maybe I need to go play with one in a Verizon shop, or see if I can get an Eval of one through work (Verizon wants us to push their products to our employees, so bug us all the time for evals).
 
Careful, Verizon will launch an assault on you to get you to sign up. Honestly, I love how the Sense UI from HTC looks but I also like the simplicity of stock android. In the end, the difference between your top choices will probably end up being miniscule. Go test out the aforementioned phones. See how they feel in your hand, how easy it is to access everything on the screen with just one hand, and, if your as subject to looks as me, which looks the coolest in your hand.

1. EVO
* Newest, most feature-packed, best current hardware.

2. Droid
* No frills UI, powerful, best build quality, massive support

3. N1
* See Droid, minus the part about build quality. Also no keyboard.

4. Incredible
* Better than the N1, but has SenseUI.

That narrows things down since I didn't care for the EVO form factor and won't give Sprint any business, I don't like the Slider KB on the Droid (or any phone for that matter)...

So likely N1, Incredible or wait for the next round of phones to come out over the next 2-3 months.
 
I think waiting a little bit won't kill me...I'll upgrade my 3GS to ver4 whenever it's available and just watch the space a little bit. It sounds like there are 2 or 3 options that might make me happier over the next couple of months than if I jumped on a N1 or Incredible right this second.
 
Eventually you're going to have to pick. Like I said earlier, there's always something bigger and better coming out. It's just a matter of time before you'll have to bite the bullet and buy a soon-to-be outdated device.
 
If you don't like the size of the EVO, please note the Incredible's not much smaller.

I doubt you will be disappointed with any of these. We may learn about another one of these options on Monday.
 
If your willing to wait ,the next generation of phones, with dual-core processors and what not, are likely to begin coming out in the fourth quarter or maybe late third quarter. If I were you I'd consider waiting.
