Receive txts over wifi on your own #

Is there a way to receive texts on your phone through wifi? My samsung galaxy 3 can do calls but I never recieve txts cause my carrier BLOWS. I've read about Google voice but then people would need a new number from me. If I port the number, what would happen then?

Yes, Google Voice can be made to do that, as can HeyWire (my personal favorite). They both require a new number. You can port your number with GV, but check with your carrier first to make sure it doesn't violate your contract.
