I know this has been covered before and ive commented on the subject but i'm getting pee'd off again about it.
Obviously i have the N5,my wife has the SGS3, and sitting next to each other i noticed her 3g signal and wifi reception was way better than mine and a lot more stable.
We are both with vodafone,we are both connected to the same sure signal box and both connected to the same router, so i can only deduce the difference is down to the handset.
WHY is the N5 so bad in this respect ?. It's the only thing that irks me about the N5 and that's because reception is the single biggest requirement of any handset.
 
I hear you, I live in apartments and I get like 1 bar but as soon as I walk out I get 4-5 bars of LTE, yet my little brothers galaxy victory that's on virgin mobile gets almost full bars. Its very annoying
 
Is it impossible to thread an aerial around the outside of all the gubbons inside or is that too easy ?. Is there nothing that can be modded to the original aerial to improve the reception.
 
You need to look at signal strength, not bars.

I suspect you may be right since in real life you will notice a better signal on your Mrs' phone but check the actual values in settings.

Signal bars on the Notification Bar are arbitrary.
 
Do note that it is not a valid comparison if you are only looking at the signal indicator in the notification bar. You should be comparing the signal strength (dBM) if you can get to it. On the Nexus 5, I type in *#*#DEBUG#*#* on the dialer, and that will allow me to look at actual signal strength (not sure how to check that on the S3)

Each manufacturer can display the signal strength indicator differently (different interpretation of the actual strength). If you have a carrier branded phone, they will influence the manufacturer about how to interpret the signal strength as well (to make their service look better than it really is) - the N5 shouldn't have carrier influence

Not saying that the N5's antennas are perfect, but since you didn't indicate how you measured the signal strength, I thought I'd add my $0.02
 
Also, what are the practical differences between your N5 and the S3 in performance. Ignoring bars, do calls get through. Are data and download speeds comparable. The bars on my N5 sometimes tell me I have like half a bar, but my internet on the phone performs fine. So, basically, I end up ignoring my bars most of the time. (wifi signal strength indicator in the notification bar does the same thing).

Not saying you don't have a real problem...
 
Well,she manages to be online when i'm not.
My phone will send calls direct to my in box even though it will call me straight away to notify me of a voice mail.
Signal strength numbers for my phone at this moment in time are hmmmmmmmmmm were 97dBm and just dropped to 73 dBm.The asu went from 9 up to 19 since typing this.
I have no idea what these mean or how to decypher them.

For LTE, 73dBm is pretty good (lower numbers are better)
