Hey!

I need your advise on setting up an older galaxy s2 (android version 4.1.2) for use by my 94 year old grandmother. The phone is possibly rooted and I'm open till installing a custom rom.

The idea is to attach the phone on the wall and use it only as a video calling device. She does not have Wi-Fi so the calling will happen over 3g/4g

The only thing she needs to learn is to press the green Skype button when she receives a call.

This is what i intend
1 As few apps as possible on the device. Preferably the base OS with only Skype
2 An app or some software to be able to control the phone remotely (incase something goes wrong so i can administer it remotely)
3 A way to send and receive sms remotely over that device and SIM

I thought I'd ask first before i start tinkering around.

Thanks!

She already has a different phone on her. A simpler button phone that she knows how to use. This s2 is only for her to receive video calls

Just something to consider when doing this, is power. Especially if it is going to be wall mounted.

Mobile phones aren't designed to be powered by a mains power supply 24 Hours a day.

Risks would include battery damage, heating and a possible fire risk.

I really like the idea of reusing old technology, but it is something to consider

Maybe an Amazon echo or Google home may be better, as she could also use these without having to get up etc

Although you would then have to solve the WiFi issue
