Apps Recorded sound - Freq analyzer

Hi,
I am thinking of creating an Android app which will let me record a sound. Then I need to get the freq range of that sound in my app and keep it saved as a profile. I then let me app read the external environment thru the mic and count the no of times that same sound is repeated.
Something like counting a repetitive sound pattern like whistle etc.

Any pointers to how I can start would be highly appreciated.
