Recovering apps from .asec files?

I see several threads related to this topic, but none has an answer that worked for me, so hopefully someone will know more now. :)

My phone: HTC Inspire 4G, Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, AT&T (curse them). Not rooted, no ROMs, no Nandroid, no Titanium.

My phone was getting quirky. I moved all the apps I could to the SD card, removed the SD card and did a factory reset on the phone. After it completed, I linked the phone to my Google account again, put the SD card back in, and...

...my apps were gone. They didn't show in Astro, the app drawer, or the manage apps settings screen (it reported no apps on the SD card).

When I view the card on the computer, I see the hidden .asec files (but I do not see the smdl2tmp1.asec or whatever file that some threads suggest deleting). Some threads suggest that the full app is not moved to the SD card, but just it's data.

I've done multiple reboots and hard reboots.

One thread suggested unmounting the SDcard, installing the app from the Market, then mounting the SD card and running the app and that the settings would be there. Didn't work. I think it was the same thread that suggested reinstalling the app and moving it to the SD card, and then it would pick up the stored settings. That didn't work either.

Is there any way to save apps and app data by moving them to the SD card? Or will they always get toasted when the device does a factory reset?

Not all of the app is moved to the SD Card so I'm afraid you've lost all your stuff.

Next time you need to use a back up program like MYbackup Pro < it works without root but it will not back up the app data without root.

If you feel like rooting you can install titanium back up and either app will then backup apps plus the data associated with said app.
