Help Recovery Mode on HTC ONE MINI

Lurker
Hi there! I can't seem to enter recovery mode on my HTC One Mini. I would like to get into this mode. I followed instructions that helped me unlock it for use. Now when I enter HBOOT and select recovery the phone vibrates. And shows the normal opening screen but with "Entering Recovery Mode" written at the top, just as it is supposed to. But then it does nothing. The screen goes black and the phone restarts into the normal OS.
I followed these instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=248&v=qpj6dEMn9dw

I could really use a hand. How can I fix this?

I don't need to watch the video (truth be told I have no time for video instructions - guess I'm showing my age!), because if you are in hboot and select "recovery" that is all there is to it.

So, if that isn't working, the question is why not? What has been done that might affect this? Have you tried to make any modifications, has there been a problem with an update, or what? Most people never need to access recovery at all, so I'm guessing that there is some problem - if you tell us the history of the device we have a chance of working out a solution.

I bought this device second hand. The person I bought if from has not tampered with the device. I know him, he isn't good with tech. I want to enter recovery to root the phone (doubt that helps you). All I have done with it in the time I have had it is download some games, watch youtube, that kind of stuff. I had to unlock the phone from an EE network and I am now with GiffGaff. The phone is fully unlocked. If you can give me specific details on which part of the phones history you need and how to find it (obviously I'm not so good myself at this stuff) then perhaps I can find it.
Thanks for the lightning fast response by the way
I did have to unlock the recovery setting by the way as the hboot had it locked

So you've unlocked the bootloader but can't enter recovery? That is strange, and a bit worrying if you've not made any other modifications, since with the bootloader locked the only thing that could affect the recovery would be an official system update.

Anyway, a stock recovery won't let you root the phone, so even if it was working you'd need to install a custom recovery before you could do that. So the procedure is to find a custom recovery image for your phone (do not use a recovery built for a different device!), then use fastboot to flash it, and if you've unlocked the bootloader then you must have fastboot set up already. If your device is the One Mini, as opposed to the One Mini 2, then I think you can find a suitable recovery image here: http://twrp.me/devices/htconeminigsm.html (note the "GSM" in that URL - if you are on a CDMA network like Sprint or Verizon in the USA then you need to find the recovery for the CDMA version). Ignore stuff about installing via an app, as you need to be rooted for that, just download an image and install as directed there.

Our One Mini Root forum is looking rather quiet, but you should be able to find some useful stuff for a rooted One Mini here.

There was a custom twrp in the instructions. I already have one here. I will send you the entire file I used to get this far. The file is not actually a zip I just had to zip it to send.

Sorry, that's what comes of my not watching the video ;). But I think I know what your problem is now.

That video was for the HTC One, not the HTC One Mini. And although the procedure is the same (unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, use recovery to flash superuser zip) you need a different build of the recovery for a different device. And indeed the TWRP in your zip file is for the HTC One (M7) - there is no way that can possibly work on the One Mini, and the best you can hope for is that it simply does nothing (which, luckily, seems to be the case - it's quite possible to brick a phone by running a recovery that was built for a different model).

So, download a TWRP that's been built for your phone (see my previous post) and install that instead. That ought to fix your problem. The superuser file should be good for any phone, it's just the recovery that's device-specific (as are ROMs, kernels and firmware, so if you make further mods it's important to use stuff that's intended for the right device).

;)
I was fairly certain the mini was included in that but you're the expert. I will check this out tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks ;)

The Mini has a different internal storage layout, as well as a different processor and many other differences. Besides, if you look at the TWRP images for the M7 and the Mini they are clearly different: the M7 images are larger, typically by ~10%. So they are definitely not the same.

I'm quite certain that's your problem there, and hence also the solution. :)

No. Just fastboot flash the recovery image.

All a factory reset does is clear apps and app data. The recovery isn't part of the ROM, so that's not relevant for a recovery flash.
