Help Red dots in icon corner?

Some apps have red dots.. what does the red dot in the corner of the icon mean? Ive never seen this before and this phone is new to me so just want to know what I means

Some times that how the icon is designed for some apps. Another reason why the red dot is because you have a message\ notification within that App.

The dots are there when the app is installed. After using the icon the first time you open the app, it disappears.I guess it's letting us know that it is still a virgin app, not having been used yet.
