The 1x means that your data connection is at the lowest level--not 4g, not 3g. If you are inside a building when this happens, see if it resolves when you go outside. Some buildings interfere with the signals, or sometimes what is in the building does.
If it is a constant thing, you may need to contact your carrier to see if they will reset your device so that it can better pick up the signal.
You might also want to join forums and see if other users are having the same problems, and how they resolved them.
