Apps refresh application icon in a Service

Is it possible to change the application icon, for instance let it show current time (updated from a Service)? I guess the answer is no, just hoping...

Separately, is it possible to start a service automatically when the phone is powered up? (guess it's also a "no")

I can't answer to the first question. But the second .. you extend a broadcast receiver class which starts the service. Within the android manifest your intent filter associates the BOOT_COMPLETED broadcast with your receiver. You will need the RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED permission for your class to register to this broad cast.
