remote question

I just got a new Stylo, mine is the Virgin Mobile edition. I tried to install several different apps to control my TV. None of them work, I got a message regarding IR blaster. Apparently my phone doesn't have this. The thing I don't understand is I was able to download the Comcast/Xfinity app and it works. I don't see how the Comcast app works and the others don't.

Can anyone please enlighten me?

Thanks!

What kind of home network setup do you have? Since you mentioned only the Xfinity app was working for you it doesn't sound like your TV is a part of your home network. Most app/services like Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc. that you'll use on your phone also require your TV to be connected to the same local network. The Xfinity app on your phone isn't in this case working directly with your TV, it's that both the phone app and your TV are indirectly linked via your Comcast account -- your phone by either WiFi or cellular connectivity, your TV by it's a cord to your Comcast cable modem.

If your TV is new enough it might have it's own wireless chip so you can just add it your home network. Or if there's an Ethernet port connect it to your Comcast modem/router with any standard patch cable. You can also buy something like a Roku or a Chromecast that just plug into a HDMI port on your TV and once you add it to your home network via WiFi those apps you were trying out on your phone should see your TV.

I can add my TV to the network. My old phone was an LG Volt 4GLTE. That one had an app called quick remote that worked. Can I just add that instead?

Is this is the app you're referring to?:

I mistook your initial query to be about using different apps to watch watch services like Netflix on your TV, looks like you want to use your phone as a remote for your TV. As long as both your phone and your TV are connected to the same network, you don't need I/R, the app connects the two via WiFi.

I think he's talking about a remote app that came on his LG Volt,In fact it came on my LG G2 and my G4.
But I don't use them,But I do use the Roku remote app sometimes.

Yeah, I'm guessing he has a Sony TV and it might be a matter of that model line needs a Sony app and just won't work with other remote apps. In any case, we're all getting too many gadgets to play with and way too many remotes. o_O

Remotes are now either bluetooth or ir controlled, so this is how Comcast/Xfinity(Bluetooth remote functionality) works apparently, my HiSense Android 55" Tv uses a bluetooth remote as well plus ir, so I can download one of the HiSense app's and still control it no problem. I use the HiShare app for it, everything built in one app.
