Remotely checking text messages

I want to check text messages on one phone from another. How do I do that? Do they have to be the same brand/model and/or with the same carrier?

Logically what this requires is an app on the remote phone that can read that phone's SMS database and report the content to you (which is basically spyware!). I don't think that brand, model or carrier would come into it: it's basically a question of remote access to data stored on one device from another - the SMS database's location, and the APIs for accessing it, are android features rather than brand or carrier-specific.
