Help Removal on unwanted junk...

Well-Known Member
Hi All,

I'd like to remove the following programs which I never use, nor intend to use. Would like some input on whether this is "final", as in once gone, gone for good. And are any other known programs dependent on any of these slated for the trash bin?

dropbox (cloud storage/sharing)
drive (cloud storage/sharing)
google+ (google's version of facebook?)
hangouts (google's version of messages)
internet (cheezy browser, have firefox)
messenger (video phoning)
mobile hotspot (?)
pages manager (more facebook crap)
peel smart remote (tv/dvd controller)
pen.up (drawing prog for artistic peeps)
play books (google prog for reading books on a 2" x 3" screen)
play movies & tv (google prog for watching shows on a 2" x 3" screen)
play music (google prog for listening to music - redundant)
play newsstand (google's filtered commie-pinko left-wing news)
s note (synch/file management - redundant)
scrapbook (just what it says, not needed)
smart manager (OS system info)
voice recorder (not needed)
voice search (not wanted)

In case you can't tell from this list, I'm not of the new "hip/cool" generation. Just want a basic phone without the clutter of unwanted junk...

TIA!

Russ

Hey Russ, your list is pretty similar to mine. Unless you're rooted, the best you can do is to disable the preinstalled apps. This would keep them from updating and also remove them from your visible apps.
As for final, if you ever did a factory reset, on your device, they will show back up.

Yeah, some of these are uninstallable, guess Samsung knows best. I will disable them. One thing is, this Peel Smart Remote seems to activate itself overnight, I don't even have an icon for it, yet it's there every morning when I waken the phone...

Edit: Ack! I can't get rid of S Note, Scrapbook, Voice Recorder, or Voice Search. They must be embedded with other progs. Also, cannot find "Internet", yet every time I click a link, I have to decide whether or not to use it? Bizarre!

FYI Mobile Hotspot is for tethering, so you can share the phone's internet connection to a laptop or something. It's a system feature, don't turn it on if you're not using it. Third-party crap that isn't Samsung or Google, like Facebook or Dropbox, Samsung gets $$$ for pre-installing them on your phone.

I'd never use it, I have wifi at home and just about all the places we stay when away from home. Understood about the pre-installs....

easy fix for the ones that you cannot UNINSTALL

* Package Disabler Pro for Samsung

Thanks, I put it on my wishlist pending further review...

When you're in your Settings >> Application manager at the top there's a 'Downloaded' tab. Swipe that tab to the left until you get to the 'All' tab. Scroll down through the list and you'll see things like 'Internet' along with all that Samsung cruft.

Been there, some (actually, a lot) of those look like system files. Not sure I want to mess with them. Internet is there under "com.sec.android.app.sbrowser..." but the disable button is grayed out. I did click force stop, but don't know how "permanent" that will be...

That is why I suggested the Package Disabler..... it does not show system files, only Apps....
It is almost impossible to get in trouble with it.... if you do something wonky, just use the " 1 click, Undo " button....
and start all over again....

No free solution for this?
Really? o_O
All of a $1.95 for a non-root solution that's not available on other mfgs devices.
You have a device that retailed for more than $600 new,how about coughing-up a couple $'s & support those who make our devices a helluva lot better than when we get 'em out-of-the-box.................................

Well there is a free solution, but you need to root your Note. When rooted you'll be able to tweak and optimize it. Note that rooting does also mean you're taking more responsibility in administering your Note and you need to be more judicious as far as exposing it to vulnerable situations (i.e. don't randomly install files from unknown, unverified sources).
