Remove lockscreen altogether?

So you won't complain when someone nicks it and incurs sky-high bills, that you have signed for, calling 24/7 to Mongolia, and downloading all the Star Trek, Indiana Jones, and Disney movies in HD (billing you of course)?

Or, worse: uses it as a remotely controlled bomb trigger...

If you are worried about any misuse of your unlocked phone, you can always download Lookout, from the market, to remotely track your phone and shut it down or wipe its data as well as scan for viruses and malware. See here:-

That doesn't prevent abuse of a totally unlocked phone. It 'only' helps with location and recovery AFTER the fact. When it has already happened. When the damage has already been done. You're really too late.

Lookout is very convenient, don't get me wrong. I have it installed too. I recommend it. But Lookout is a LAST line of defense*. The phone lock is the FIRST line of defense. The front door to your house. You don't leave the front door to your house open and unlocked, do you?

To answer your question, there are various lockscreen replacements out there, some would require root. But it should be possible to skip it, yes. I don't know the names off the top of my head though sorry :(

Have you downloaded and installed, "No Lock" from the Market as I suggested earlier?
 
Get No Lock from the market, then deactivate lockscreen. Problem is that whenever any hardware button gets pressed, like the home key on some phones, the screen is turned on and you may get pocket activity or something.
