Remove pre installed apps or features on the Droids?

I'm up for a new phone to replace my hated BB Storm. I played with the DX and D2, ( still can't decide) in the store. What struck me was the amount of apps or widgets for things I'll never use cluttering the screens. Can these be removed or is this all linked to the OS? Is this what people are talking about in reference to installing ROMS? I understand that this is not yet possible on the Ds because of eFuse. I also understand it is being worked on.

Yeah, the DX and D2 are cursed with Motoblur and bloatware. I honestly think you would have a better experience getting a D1 or Dinc, rooting it, and installing a custom ROM, at least for now. (assuming that you want to be on Verizon).

You can root the DX and remove some but not all of the bloatware. No custom ROM's yet for the DX. See this thread if you want to learn more about removing pre-installed apps from the DX: http://androidforums.com/all-things...t-apps-apks-removable-non-removable-root.html

The D2 is not rooted yet, but it's only been 3 days.

You can hope to one day have custom ROM's for the DX and D2 that are as good as the ones currently available for the D1, but it's not going to happen overnight.

So to answer your question, yes you can remove some apps from the DX by rooting, but you can't remove any pre-installed apps from the D2 (yet).

As an alternative if you're not going to root, you can use LauncherPro as a Home replacement. It lets you hide apps in the app drawer. I know it's not the same as removing the bloat, but hiding it is better than not hiding it.
