Hello and welcome to Android Forums. You might check your messaging app to make certain there isn't a confirmation of messages successfully sent on or something similar. If your text app is from the play store, you might delete it and install a new copy. You might consider using a different messaging app.. there are many popular apps at the play store. I see many on this site use and enjoy Textra SMS for their messaging. I've not used it personally but I often read of members recommending it. And the last suggestion would be a factory reset that no doubt would clear matters created from your last upgrade. In my opinion, that would be a drastic measure to fix your present text app.
Did you follow @olbriar's suggestion to check its settings? It really sounds like an errant setting is causing this unwanted behavior.I'm using the stock messaging app

Be sure to check its settings within the app and also in System Settings, under Notifications.
