Help Return To App After Sleeping

I'm using an HTC One M8 and it seems as though the Android OS does something REALLY annoying that my old Galaxy S4 didn't do. If I have an app running and the device goes into sleep mode, when I awake the phone I'm at the home screen instead of the app. This is really annoying for things like my audio player, which typically is playing music and after a few minutes, the sleep screen turns on. When I want to get back into the audio player, I have to re-open it. Samsung devices don't do this, they awake right where you left off. Is there any way to tell this phone to do that too? Thanks!

Main settings, Display & Gestures, turn on motion launch gestures.

Pick up phone in portrait, swipe up from the bottom, last app open appears.

Works that way on Nova launcher, *pretty sure* it's the same with stock.

Swipe from left to get to widgets, depending on your setup, that may work for you too, sorry, not sure.

Welcome to the forums! :)
