Is there an app that allows me to assign a different ringtone to different contacts?

it's called ringdroid.... awesome app..... use songs from your sd card.... cut them any way you want and assign as notification or as ringtone

You can also use Handscent. You can even assign different icons and LED colors for individuals.

the downside is that the message notification is a standard ringtone, you can not have different tones depending on the contact, it is just what you set up as notification tone.
