Ringtone goes off....nothing there?

I'm using my very first droid phone, Samsung Galaxy s3, love it.
But Im curious, every once in a while, i hear my phone text ringtone go off, I look, and there's no message there. Explanation?

If you have not set a personalized ringtone for messages it will use the default tone, which is used for a multitude of other notification.

It might be calendar reminders, too. My phone was making seemingly random tones on occasions. I finally figured out what it was.
