ringtone notification?

Hi all, I am new to the smartphone world so please bear with me.

I have a htc evo, can I make a short ringtone for the text notification? Do I need an app for this? I was thinking of getting light flow which I learned about from here to make the notifications repeat but I never got around to it. Thanks. Brian.

You don't need an app for it, although it makes it convenient. For notification tones all you need is a supported format (.mp3, .ogg, etc.) and place the file on your SD card in a folder called "notifications". If you want them available as ringtones as well, then copy the files to a folder named "ringtones".
