I had my HTC G2 about a year before upgrading to a bigger SD card. In that time, I had no problems with custom ring tones--I created a handful of mp3's and assigned them to contacts. After upgrading from the 8 to a 32G card (by copying the 8 to my computer, then copying those files/directories to the 32g card), the phone picked random mp3's for my tones--not just random selections from the ringtones folder, but somewhat randomly, apparently from any MP3 anywhere on the phone. Most were from the music folder, but one ringtone wound up being a voicemail I'd downloaded from Gmail. When I looked at the ringtone listed for that contact, it would have the proper name of the MP3 it was playing, and it would let me change it back to the ringtone I wanted. I had assumed that the problem was a one-time thing, but it has happened twice again in about 3 weeks. Google shows a few similar issues, but so far no solutions. Anyone have any ideas, or where else I can look?

I remember this happening when I first upgraded from my 2G to my current 4G. I'm upgrading again to 32G and want to prevent it.
I *think* I know what the cause is. I've had an mp3 player before do something similar. It's probably that android remembers the number of the FAT entry along with the path name to speed up finding the file. Instead of delving into the filesystem directory structure, it goes straight to the stored FAT entry and loads the file. When you copy files from one device to another, it creates a new directory structure with new FAT entries, the sequence of which end up not matching the old device. I'm looking for a way to copy the files using the same fat entries, but while still using/making a larger filesystem to match the larger device.

If it had been a one time thing, and I just had to reset the ringtones once, I wouldn't have cared that much--It is a 10 minute or so job. The problem was that despite not changing cards again, it kept happening.
There was apparently an issue with the new card--I was also having problems where pushing lightly on the case in certain spots near the card would turn the phone completely off (not just a reboot). Returning the original SD card to the phone cured both problems.

I'm new to Android. I haven't changed my card, but I'm having the same problem. My Palm Centro died and I bought a Motorola DROID 4 because it has a real keyboard. I'm so frustrated that I'm thinking of returning it within the allowed period. Maybe I should get a Blackberry or an iPhone? Having invested much too much time getting basic functions to work, I'd like to try solving the changing tone problem before giving up.
The default function to sound a notification for a calendar meeting didn't work. I searched and found Calendar Event Reminder, which appears to work as advertised. But this morning it sounded an unfamiliar tone instead of the one I selected, which worked yesterday. This appears to be the same problem that others have reported in this thread.
From my limited experience, it appears that the default apps and built-in function in the Android are faulty. I can't get the functionality I had with a Palm Pilot! It seems that the general solution is to find an app that does the job right. In this thread and related ones, I've seen a few apps mentioned. The one getting the most positive feedback is Ringtone Manager Pro. I thought I'd ask for advice before giving it a try.
