Many threads on how to root your phone.
Check out the forums on Galaxy Spica and Galaxy Lite. Same phone, just different model no.

I have an official Eclair 2.1 firmware installed in my spica.

Details:
Baseband: i570EDXJC2
Kernel: 2.6.29 chad.lee@SE-S604 #2
Build no: ECLAIR.DXJC4
Location: Singapore (Starhub for APN)

Is there any way I could root my device without flashing the firmware?
Sorry if its a repost. I tried searching google, but did not get anything useful.

Thanks for the help,

From what I can gather, when you flash your phone to UPGRADE it you need a set of rar files that gets the update done. to root it, only some of the rar files are updated but the process is the same, just with new info in an updated .rar

So the simple answer is no, You will have to 'flash' through odin, with updated .rar files - the contents of which are modified, and thus 'root' you phone.

I believe this is possible using the Android SDK. But you need to know your linux. Your better off and it's easier to use Odin and flash using a rooted PDA file.

If you're already on 2.1 use this thread and files to root.

How to root your Android 2.1 phone

N.B. You must be on a non rooted standard 2.1 install.

You only need to use Odin with these 2 files.

spica_3.ops and i5700_LK2-06_beta4_PDA.tar files.

ie.

OPS = spica_jc3.ops
BOOT =
PHONE =
PDA = i5700_LK2-06_beta4_PDA.tar
CSC =

[ ] One Package (not ticked)
[x] Reboot (ticked)
[x] Protect OPS (ticked)
[x] Reset Time (ticked) 300
[ ] Debug (not ticked)

Thanks Beerkan .. But however my official firmware version is i570EDXJC2. Is it possible to use spica_jc3.ops with my firmware? I read in some other forum that firmware must be >=JC3 for spica_jc3.ops file.

Yes, this is stated in the instructions in the link.

If you're on i570EDXJC2 or earlier, update to a later version, then use Odin with the spica_3.ops and i5700_LK2-06_beta4_PDA.tar files.

@Beerkan .. I asked LesHak about the same. He said the PDA version matters .. In my case the Phone version is JC2 and PDA version is JC4.

Hope I am good to try rooting with the procedures specified in the tutorial ..
Please correct me if I am wrong..

Good point. Firmware updates can include different files for Modem PDA etc. Get your firmware from a reliable source.

Peronsally, I'd update to the latest firmware before putting on LeshaK's root update.

It's 10mins to update firmware, and a further 5 to put on LeshaK's root.

I successfully rooted (LK2.02) my phone without reflashing the firmware and it was working fine till yesterday, when i accidentally put it in download mode.
When I tried to restart the phone by removing the battery and put it back, its not going past boot screen (sandroid.net blue screen).
I am able to goto the recovery mode but not able to boot my phone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
